Tragedy or Statistic – Scope Insensitivity Bias

“The death of one man is a tragedy, the death of millions is a statistic.” With Scope Insensitivity Bias, individual, relatable humans become masses, and masses become abstract, unrelatable statistics.

12 Does the possibilist actually study?

Actualists and possibilists often make different choices. One makes the best possible choice, regardless of its feasibility, and the other makes the pragmatic one.

11 Save-the-World Paralysis

We sometimes find ourselves stuck in analysis paralysis, searching for the perfect, catch-all solution to solve all the world’s problems, all at once. But it doesn’t exist.

10 How to CREATE a difference

What’s the difference between participating in change and CREATING a difference? Well, one is like reading a script, and the other is writing it. In one case, a mold predates actions, and in the other, our actions mold creations.

IMPACTivism sits at the intersection of rational compassion and effective action, where we are each incredibly capable of impacting positive change for the people, non-human animals and environmental causes needing it most. This podcast explores ideas we can consider, choices we can make, and actions we can take, as individuals, to get better at doing good.

As a senior-level humanitarian advocacy advisor and INGO representative in some of the world’s largest humanitarian crises and war zones, host Logan Sullivan observed the dissonance between kindhearted intent and positive outcomes in a world demanding impact. Through 60ish countries on 6 continents in 8 years, he investigated purpose, perspective, and how to most logically and effectively impact change as one seemingly disempowered individual. Now, he’s returned home to Portland, OR to share his findings through a book, podcast, YouTube channel, and speaking engagements. He’s also attempting to build a tiny house on wheels — wish him luck.

ABOUT THE IMPACTivism PODCAST

I believe…

…We are lucky
  • If you’re reading this on your own computer or smart phone with high-speed wifi, you are one of the luckiest, most empowered humans to ever live
  • If you make $55,000 a year in the US, you are the richest 1% of humans on earth ($11,880 annually, the American poverty level, leaves you in the wealthiest 15%), while half the world population lives on less than what $4 per day buys in America
  • The average American, already adjusted for inflation, is 30 times richer today than in the year 1800
  • Thanks to globalization and technology, few people who have ever lived were more empowered to grow informed and to help humans, non-human animals and this planet we share
…We are burdened
  • The world is troubled and we know it
  • With immense fortune comes responsibility (but incredible opportunity, too)
  • We are in position to act, but how and where to start can seem overwhelming, and actually impacting change can seem hopeless
…We are good
  • We all want to contribute to making our world a better place
  • We do not harm on purpose, but as a result of lacking awareness, cognative biases, defusion of personal responsibility, de-individualization of self, and uncritical conformity to group norms
  • When informed, conscious and energized, we will see ourselves as a resource for global betterment and live accordingly
…We are reasonable
  • Possessing the choice to focus on the positives in the world is an EXTREME luxury
  • Emotional, arational application of our good intentions rarely yields the most positive outcomes
  • Rational scrutiny of our good intentions can quickly spin our actions in the right direction
…We can change the world, and live well too!
  • Our careers, how we give, how we volunteer, how we consume, how we learn, how we teach, how we share, how we explore… how we THINK and how we ACT literally change the world, if in the slightest, every day
  • By accepting the complication of thinking and acting consciously and rationally, and by uplifting logic over emotion on the topic of good intentions, we can minimize our inevitable negative imprints on the world and maximize our positive contributions
  • Rational Compassion + Effective Action = IMPACTivism

…And The IMPACTivism Podcast is a valuable tool dedicated to helping you impact change!

The IMPACTivism Podcast

seeks the intersection of rational compassion and effective action. It examines how we can each step beyond FEEL-good benevolence and towards IMPACT-good altruism, and discover fulfilled, happy lives too.

Through his senior-level work in some of the world’s largest humanitarian crises and war zones, and his research and exploration across 60 countries in 8 years, host Logan Sullivan observed the dissonance between kindhearted intent and positive outcomes in a world demanding impact.

He aims to explore how we can not only participate in change, but, better yet, CREATE A DIFFERENCE through rational and informed daily (and life) decisions and conscious actions. And as long as we’re trying to do good, why not get good at it, sometimes accomplishing dozens of times as much good with no additional effort?

Logan and his inspiring guests discuss the impacts of how we work, how we play, how we consume, how we give, how we teach, how we love, how we volunteer, how we learn, how we share, how we choose, how we help, and how we create.

The world needs action today, and it too will need wise, energized advocates tomorrow. But can’t we act urgently, learn patiently, and grow consciously, healthily, and happily in tandem? With our individual happiness and the wellbeing of a wounded world on the line, Logan believes there’s far too much at stake not to try.
